FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2023-118 DAILY FEATURE:
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (June 27, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps from Steve Kovacs, we recall a most-famous U.S. Route – no longer officially a highway.
A Road Nevermore
This road was one or the original numbered roads in the US, having been established in 1926.
It dissects eight states as it winds 2448 miles from Chicago to the Pacific Ocean at Santa Monica.
It has been written about, had songs about it and even had a TV series about it.
Let’s face it, the aura of this road is quite appealing.
But nevermore. Route 66 was taken off the official highway list on June 26, 1985. The Historic Route 66 lives though in markers, and in people’s imagination.
Greyhound’s US routes are shown in this map from 1934. While Route 66 is not mentioned, the bus line did travel much of it.
