LOVELAND, OH (June 28, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps from Steve Kovacs, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the unveiling of America’s most popular sports car.

Freedom and Adventure

What is synonymous with freedom and adventure when it comes to cars?

The Corvette, which celebrates its 70th anniversary today.

This two-seater sports car is the most popular of all time in its class.  It is now in its 8th generation (C8), since 2020.

One of General Motors’ public relations guys suggested to name this post World War II revolutionary car after a warship, more specifically after the small but highly maneuverable corvette.  It stuck.

New Corvettes roll of the assembly line in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the only place they are manufactured since 1981.

The Corvette museum is adjacent to the plant.  When you are in the area it really is worth a visit, now that the cave collapsing and devouring several of the museum pieces several years ago has been filled in and stabilized.  Limestone caves are nearby, including the largest cave in length in the world, Mammoth Cave, so having a cave under the museum is not overly shocking.
