FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2026-117
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (July 8, 2026) – This edition of FWM teaches is about the business of journalism; an iconic daily journal.
IT’S YOUR BUSINESS
The first edition of The Wall Street Journal was published on July 8, 1889. It was started by Charles Dow, Edward Jones, and Charles Bergstresser. The four-page newspaper sold for two cents.
Dow and Jones already had their own business news service which wrote an Afternoon Letter and what were known as “flimsies”, short bulletins put out during the day. In 1898, the Journal switched to morning publication.
Today The Wall Street Journal is the largest print newspaper in the United States and second in digital circulation to The New York Times. It is considered to be one of the US’ “newspapers of record,” meaning that its articles are considered authoritative and independent. It has been honored with 39 Pulitzer Prizes during its tenure.
