FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2026-118

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (July 9, 2026) – This edition of FWM celebrates another Independence Day – this one is Argentina.

Down Under

Today is Argentina Independence Day, the 210th anniversary of the Congress of Tucuman’s declaration of independence from Spain.

The family house where the delegates gathered to proclaim the historic change is now a museum, Casa Historica de la Independencia.

Celebrations are much like in the US with parades, public gatherings and concerts, celebrations of local culture and eating traditional local foods.

Argentina is known for being the birthplace of the tango, its wonderful beef and in particular the asado (barbecued beef), and wine production.  It is home to the tallest mountain in both the western and southern hemispheres – Aconcagua – located in the Andes mountain range.  Also, it is the home to the world’s most southern city, Ushuaia in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, the “end of the world” in Argentina is the gateway to most Antarctic excursions.

This 1855 Colton map is of the Southern Cone – Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.
