FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2024-167

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (September 5, 2024) – In this edition of Fun with Maps we talk of a boycott compromise, but not independence.

Think of the Trades

The first Continental Congress met in Philadelphia’s Carpenter’s Hall on September 5 through October 26, 1774.  The meeting started 250 years ago.

All but Georgia was represented of the 13 colonies, and future states.

The Congress did not declare independence from the British, rather reached a compromise of boycotting British goods as of December 1, 1774.

A Southerner, Payton Raldolph of Virginia was elected president of the Congress.

More work was to be done to declare independence from the British throne as we all know it.

Mithell, an emigree from Scotland, created this map of Philadelphia from 1850.
