FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2021-236 DAILY FEATURE:
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (December 14, 2021) – In Issue 2021-236 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we travel to Kentucky – a little faster today.
FRANKFORT TO CINCINNATI IN JUST OVER 2 DAYS
Although the distance between Frankfort, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio can now be covered in an hour and a half by using two interstates, settlers coming to the area were not so lucky.
In 1793, the first state road was funded, which would be suited to travel by wagon, and cut the journey to about two and a half days – well to Covington, situated across from Cincinnati on the Ohio River. People, trade goods and military supplies all depended on a maintained and safe passage to reach the continually northwest moving boundaries of the growing new country.
Giving the state the power to authorize and maintain roads, rather than depend on private funding, smoothed the bumpy ride from the Appalachian Mountains to the Ohio River.
SPECIAL NOTE: At this time of crisis following the devastating tornado in Western Kentucky over the weekend, we take time out to offer our thoughts and prayers for all affected and for all those answering the call to bring relief during this trying time of loss and recovery. We are with you Kentucky!
