The Car

The first successful petrol (gas) powered automobile was patented on this day in 1886 by Karl Benz of Karsruhe, Germany.

Benz formed a company to manufacture these new contraptions, which were three-wheeled at first.  In 1926 his enterprise merged with competing Daimler-Motoren-Gesellscaft.

The name Mercedes stuck, and the future Daimler-Benz company used Mercedes for a brand of their automobiles.

The rest of the story is that the Austro-Hungarian diplomat used his daughter’s name, Mercedes, as his racing pseudonym.   The power of daughters.
