FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2024-131
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (July 16, 2024) – In this edition of Fun with Maps we look at some of the history of religious crusaders.
DC
Washington, District of Columbia was established as the permanent seat of the Federal Government on July 16, 1790. It took land from Maryland and Virginia. It was a compromise setting between the northern and southern states – in a swampy area…
A lot of the swamp was drained and the Potomac River redirected – resulting in land for the Lincoln Memorial, among other buildings.
But did you know that the Virginia part of Washington DC was returned to the state in 1847. So, what we have now is just land offered by Maryland for DC.
This Hoen map of Washington DC from 1890 highlights its sewage system….
