Fun with Maps ISSUE 2025-026
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (February 10, 2025) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps, we study the trade history of India.
India
The many riches of India attracted European trading companies to establish bases by the early 18th century. The British East India trading Company was the most dominant.
The British conquered India by dividing the many fractions within the subcontinent.
The British focused on Bengal to a large extent and established Calcutta / Kolkata as the capital.
But there was some unrest, and the city was not anywhere close to centrally located, so the capital was moved to New Delhi on February 10, 1931. New Delhi was established in 1911, as an adjacent city to Delhi.
India gained independence from Britain in 1947.
Here is Tallis’s 1851 map of northern India, showing Delhi.
