By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (April 13, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps from Steve Kovacs, we celebrate the birthday of a U.S. President who was truly a “Statesman”.

TJ

Happy Birthday, Thomas Jefferson!

He was born 280 years ago, on April 13, 1743.

Jefferson held many political offices – Governor of Virginia, US Secretary of State (the first), Vice President of US, and President of US for two terms.

On Jefferson’s watch the US expanded greatly westward with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.  Then Jefferson’s government sponsored several exploratory ventures, most notably financing Lewis and Clark on their western exploration.

However, his true love was architecture.  While he had only a limited time for designing buildings, he did design his primary residence, Monticello.   But he couldn’t resist the calling of politics at the end.

Senex issued this map of Virginia and Maryland in 1719.
