By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (November 9, 2022) – In Issue 2022-199 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we learn more history of Pearl Harbor and the United States Navy.

Aloha

The US interest in the Pacific and in Hawaii specifically heightened throughout the 19th century.

A key strategic step for taking the US interest to the next level was gaining the right to the use of Pearl Harbor by the US Navy.  The US Navy did officially gain coaling and repair rights on November 9, 1887 during King Kalakaua’s reign.

Hawaii was annexed by the US in 1898 and the Naval Base at Pearl Harbor was formally established the year after.

Pearl Harbor remains a key US Naval installation and a tourist attraction as well – mostly for solemn visits to the Memorial honoring the lives and ships lost during the 1941 Japanese attack.

This ornate map of the Hawaiian Islands shows the routes flown by Hawaiian Airlines.  It was issued in 1978.
