Evening Special from the ‘Poet’s Corner’
By Susan F. Adams
LOVELAND, OH (September 18, 2023) – This special evening edition of Loveland Beacon features another poem from our featured poet Susan Adams.
Susan shared the following story about today’s feature poem: Almost a Widow!
Here’s the story:
As Co-Rider, it was my duty to stop the Wing if anything should happen to My Rider. So, I took the free Rider Education Training Classes. We were immediately taught to stop the bike with the brake, then put the feet down. Don refused to take the class because, he said, they couldn’t teach him anything since he had been driving two wheels since he was 12 years old (A Cushman Motor scooter).
Pulling our trailer, we started off to Americaid in the New York Finger Lakes. We were ready to cross the S.R. 48 Loveland Railroad tracks where the pavement was full of deep holes. Going a snail’s-pace, the wheel of the trailer couldn’t skim the hole, but, instead, went down into it. This caused us to jackknife in to the opposite lane with the trailer pushing forward. Out went (Don’s) feet, jerking us from side-to-side. Not letting the brakes be the only thing to stop us automatically threw him over the handlebars and fractured his ribs. The Wing went over onto its crash bars and threw him onto the pavement. The poem tells you the details of what happened to him. – Susan F. Adams
