LOVELAND, OH (December 13, 2022) – On Monday, December 12, the Ohio State Controlling Board approved disaster relief funding for Goshen Township to assist in recovery from the July 6, tornado while today, Tuesday, December 13, the Ohio Senate passed Makenna’s Law sponsored by Representatives Jean Schmidt (R- Loveland) and Adam Miller (D-Columbus) sending the bill onto the Governor.

Makenna’s Law seeks to limit swimming pool’s water pressure.
“This bill is extremely important to the safety of Ohio’s families,” Schmidt said. “When our families go out for a fun day at a pool or water park, they should never have to worry about injury from water pressure.”
At seven years old Makenna Day sustained serious injuries while standing over a water feature at a local swimming pool. Since then, Schmidt and Miller worked together sounding the alarm for limits on pool water pressure. Surviving the initial injury, Makenna underwent surgery and multiple follow-up treatments to ensure her full recovery. She has shared her story throughout the committee process in an effort to prevent a similar incident from happening to other children.
“Makenna, a Milford Elementary student, and her mother came to me and asked me to pass this law,” Schmidt said. “I admire her bravery at such a young age. After she went through this horrible accident, she stepped up with the intention of helping others. I am so grateful to see her idea come to fruition.”
The bill now heads to the Governor for further action. In other news from the office of Ohio House Representative Jean Schmidt, she spoke about her support for the Ohio State Controlling Board decision to fund relief for Goshen Township tornado recovery efforts.

Specifically, on Monday the Ohio State Controlling Board approved $1.5 million in funding for disaster relief in Goshen Township to assist in their recovery efforts from the tornado which devastated the community July 6.
News of the funding approval was welcomed by State Representative Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland). She supported disaster relief funding during negotiations over the state operating budget, House Bill 110.
“After the devastating tornado in July, Goshen Township suffered severe economic loss,” Schmidt said. “This funding provides an excellent opportunity for the community to grow and restore both its economic growth and its beauty.”
The funds will be used to address damages to public buildings, debris removal operations, and emergency response measures.
The Controlling Board is not scheduled to meet again until January 23, 2023.
