FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2024-178
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (September 20, 2024) – In this edition of Fun with Maps we visit a cultural event for the big screen.
SILVER SCREEN
The Cannes (now International) Film Festival commenced on September 20, 1946 with 21 countries participating.
It is one of the big five film festivals, along with Venice, Berlin, Toronto and Sundance.
The French selected the lovely town of Cannes along the French Riviera to host the annual festival to attract more people to the venue. The original plan was to start the festival in 1938, but politics intervened.
As expected, there were numerous controversies along the way. Two “very French”, in my view, occurred in 2015 when several ladies were not allowed to enter the festival hall as they wore flat soled shoes and not high heels. In the same year there was an attempt to ban selfies on the red carpet.
This map of the French and Italian Riviera is by Ortelius from 1573.
