FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2021-165 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (August 26, 2021) – In Issue 2021-165 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we learn where  the Green Bay Packers football team got their name.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PACKERS!

Although Green Bay had a football team since 1919, on August 27, 1921 the American Professional Football Association awarded a franchise to the Acme Packers of Green Bay, beginning the team’s path to today’s NFL. The Packers are the third oldest franchise in the NFL and the only non-profit, community-owned sports franchise in the United States.  Starting with a victory in Super Bowl I, the team has won 13 league championships, the most in the NFL.

The Bears-Packers rivalry, which dates back 100 years to 1921, is one of the oldest professional sports rivalries in the country. Word is that the Cheeseheads possibly have the longest waiting list for season tickets in professional sports – an average wait of 30 years.

Here is Wisconsin’s map by Cram issued 14 years before the Acme Packers’ franchise was formed.

On a side note, I’m wondering if Wile E. Coyote or the Road Runner had any dealings with Acme’s football franchise…  If you don’t get this, you probably didn’t watch Saturday morning TV cartoon shows.
