FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2021-16

DAILY FEATURE: By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (January 26, 2021) – In Issue 2021-16 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we find more than sun, sand and sea in the Dominican Republic

Duarte’s Day

Today is a National Holiday in the Dominican Republic celebrating the birthday of Juan Pablo Duarte (1813).

As a young man, he organized and promoted the Trinitario movement.  This eventually led to the Dominican Republic gaining independence from Haitian rule in 1844.

While many might think of a beach vacation when the Dominican Republic is mentioned, it has a diversified economy beyond tourism.  The country has the largest economy in the Caribbean and Central American region.  It has been the fastest growing economy for years in the Americas.

The map shown is that of Hispaniola by Bellin from 1780.  The island’s eastern portion is the Dominican Republic and Haiti occupies the western portions.
