Hoxworth Blood Center Seeks to Grow Donor Roster With New “Refer a Friend” Program

NEWS RELEASE: Cara Nicolas, Associate Director, Public Relations

CINCINNATI, OH (January 26, 2021) – Less than 10% of eligible blood donors actually donate.  Approximately 38% of the United States population is eligible to donate blood.

Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, is hoping to change those numbers with a new Refer A Friend program, taking place throughout the month of February.

Between February 1 and February 28, individuals who have donated with Hoxworth in the past can refer a family member or friend to donate blood. If that person accepts the challenge and rolls up a sleeve, both people will receive a $5 e-gift card.

“Every five seconds, someone in the United States will need a blood transfusion” – Alecia Lipton, Director of Public Relations, Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati

Yet, the national blood supply comes from a very small group of people who volunteer their time to donate Lipton says.

“It is an unfortunate truth that need for blood never stops; cancer patients, transplant recipients, and trauma victims all require blood, which has to come from volunteer blood donors,” said Lipton. “To provide this vital service to local patients, we must continue to grow our ranks of lifesavers in the Tri-State area.”

Existing blood donors can refer a friend at www.hoxworth.org/donors/refer starting today, and there is no limit to the number of people one can nominate. The nominee/new donor must donate within the month of February to be counted as part of the promotion.

To schedule a donation, call Hoxworth at 513-451-0910 or visit www.hoxworth.org. Appointments are encouraged to maintain proper social distancing, and masks are required of all donors.
