FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2022-044 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (March 4, 2022) – In Issue 2022-044 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, tells us where the U.S. Congress began on this date in history.

New York City, Seat of Government

New York City did host the first session of the First United States Congress, which convened on March 4, 1789 at Federal Hall.  Previously, the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia, Baltimore, etc.

The U. S. Congress moved subsequently to Philadelphia, and more south to Washington in 1800.  The site of Washington D. C., previous partly swamp land, was selected as a geographical compromise between northern and southern States.

Here is an 1859 reissue of the 1664 map of lower Manhattan, – a decade before it was sold to the British by the Dutch.  North is to the left.
