By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (February 4, 2022) – In Issue 2022-024 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we honor the lighting of the torch for the 2022 Winter Games.
Olympics
Today is the opening of the XXIV Olympic Winter Games, commonly referred to as “Beijing 2022.”
Beijing is the only city to have hosted both Summer and Winter Olympics Games.
Almost 3000 athletes from 91 countries are competing in 109 events.
The US is represented by 224 participants, the largest contingent from one country. Nineteen countries have only 1 athlete.
Ice hockey has the most athletes participating, 350 in total, and is also the sport where the most US athletes will be in action.
Enjoy some of the snow and ice in Beijing before the flame goes out on the 20th.
Wilkinson’s map of China from 1809 is presented here.
