FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2022-174 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (September 29, 2022) – In Issue 2022-174 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, it is a building meant for honor and service.

The Nation’s Church

The cornerstone of the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.’s northern portion was laid on September 29, 1907.  It was completed in 1990; however, it has been in use well before the official completion date.

Pierre L’Enfant created a plan for the US federal city in 1792.  While its essence was eventually executed, many changes were made, and among those was the omission of a national church building – well, until it was built but not where Pierre had drawn it.  Politics.

The Cathedral is a magnificent building and is the second largest church in the US.

It has some rather cool stained glass.  One includes rocks brought back from the Moon by an Apollo mission.

State funerals were held here for four US Presidents: Eisenhower, Reagan, Ford and (GHW) Bush.

Johnson’s 1868 map of D.C. is presented here.
