FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2023-39 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (March 1, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps from Steve Kovacs, we celebrate 220 years for the 17th state in our union.

THE GREAT RIVER STATE

This state derives its name from the river which borders it on the east in part and all of it on the south.

The name means “great river” in the native Seneca language.

As a side note, the Seneca tribe is rather significant to the author, having graduated from Seneca High School in the Commonwealth south of this state.

  • This state is home to many of the mysterious serpent mounds.
  • This is also the state notorious for having one of its northern rivers on fire for a while.
  • The name of this state’s three largest metropolitan areas all begin with the letter “C”.

You know by now that we are talking about Ohio. Today is the 220th year anniversary of Ohio becoming a state – the 17th.

Here is the state issued railroad map of Ohio from 1901.
