FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2021-57 DAILY FEATURE:
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (March 25, 2021) – In Issue 2021-57 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, it’s all about the beginnings of a magical city.
Venice
Venice is a magical city to visit, especially during carnival season. It sits on over 100 small islands created by the alluvial silt washed down from the Alps by a series of rivers. The canals, over 400 bridges, ancient buildings, and a unique way of life make this one of the most interesting cities in the world.
Venice was founded 1600 years ago today. Although its early history is largely undocumented, it was likely first inhabited by refugees from nearby Roman cities. As a city state, Venice rose to power over time and became a major maritime and financial center. Its loss of status and power occurred over a long period of time, starting in the 15th century.
