FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2022-007 DAILY FEATURE:
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (January 12, 2022) – In Issue 2022-007 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we celebrate the anniversary of the crowning of Gustav Vasa – Gustav I of Sweden.
FATHER OF SWEDEN
On January 12, 1528 Gustav Vasa was crowned Gustav I of Sweden. His reign of 37 years marks the formation of the modern country of Sweden.
Sweden had previously been part of the Kalmar Union, consisting of Denmark, Sweden and Norway.
Gustav Vasa is considered to be the most significant ruler in Swedish history. He established a national church, brought the country out from under foreign domination, standardized the language, and established the hereditary monarchy.
One of his granddaughters married into the family lineage of Eric the Victorious, giving the current Swedish monarchy a claim back to 970AD.
Colton’s map from 1855 shows the current countries old Kalmar Union: Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
