FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2026-100: A Rewind Special

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (June 15, 2026) – This Rewind special edition celebrates the 100th  edition of Fun with Maps for 2026 with a return to the British premier horse racing event. (Originally published on Loveland Beacon 6/15/2021)

Ascot

The Royal Ascot Horse Racing takes place this year from today through June 19.  This is the occasion to dress-up and be seen, similar to the Kentucky Derby.  Fancy hats for the ladies.  We have one of those hats in our closet from our days in England.

This premier British horse racing was founded in 1711.

The horses race in the clockwise direction.  This is confusing to the poor horses slated to run in the US as well; as in the States, the racing is in the counterclockwise direction.

There are 26 days of racing in the year, so if you miss Royal Ascot, there are other opportunities to bet on the ponies.

Ascot is located about 6 miles from Windsor in Berkshire.  Here is Smith’s 1808 map of Berkshire.
