FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2026-099

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (June 12, 2026) – This edition of Fun with Maps recognizes the creation of an Empire formed in response to rebellion.

HUNGARY REBELS

The Austro-Hungarian Empire was created on June 12, 1867.

It was formed after Austria could not control the rebellious Hungarians and decided to have joint powers.

The head of the state was simultaneously the Emperor of Austria and the King of Hungary.  It had dual capitals in Vienna and Budapest.

The Empire was the third most populous country in Europe and one of the leading manufacturers in the world, for example fourth in machine manufacturing.

Unfortunately for the Empire, it picked the wrong side in World War I, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire officially dissolved at the conclusion of the War.

While this 1855 map by Colton predates the formation of the Empire, it shows the area of the eventual Empire.
