FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2023-22 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (February 3, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Map from Steve Kovacs, we honor the memory of legendary early rock-n-roll artists

THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED

February 2, 1959 is immortalized in the Don McLean song, “American Pie”, as “the day the music died.”

A plane crash in northern Iowa took the lives of 3 early rock and roll notables – Ritchie Valens. Buddy Holly, and “the Big Bopper”, J. P. Richardson.

The trio was on a chartered plane headed to Fargo, North Dakota.  The other three members of Holly’s band were travelling by bus, but Holly had chartered a plane after growing tired of travelling in unreliable weather and on unreliable buses.

The group was on a 24-stop tour of the Midwest, promoted as the “Winter Dance Party.” Cincinnati was not on the schedule, but the closest performance would have been in Louisville, Kentucky on February 11 followed by performances in Canton and Youngstown, Ohio.
