My hearing is just fine…

By Susan Adams, poet

LOVELAND, OH (April 17, 2023) – Today Loveland Beacon features the long-awaited second edition of Poet’s Corner with Susan Adams.

Susan Adams – Featured Poet (Chuck Gibson)

It’s been a while since the inaugural edition published here on March 28, but we’re pleased to have this poem and more to follow. Susan hopes her poetry will bring a little laughter into your day.

Here’s a little reminder on the background of our featured poet Susan F. Adams. She is a Loveland resident and, practices her faith at St. Columban Catholic Church. Her husband of 64 years, Don Adams passed away in July of 2022. They were married in 1958. Beside 86 years of life experience, her education included earning a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the College of Mt. Saint Joseph. Retired now, she served as a nurse at the Cincinnati Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital working part-time there for 30 years.

Poetry is not her only voice. Susan Adams is a “well-trained” soprano voice. She performed in local outdoor shows and as first female cantor at St. Columban.

Today’s featured poem comes from a visit to Dr. Scott, her audiologist (aka: hearing doctor). Dr. Scott of Beltone asked Susan to write a poem about all the reasons people think they don’t need a hearing aid. The following poem is written based on the first-hand experience Susan had with her late husband Donald making excuses for not needing a hearing aid. He always said: “My hearing is fine!”

“Denial is the Name of The Game”

My Doctor sent me for a hearing test.

I couldn’t understand her, for she mumbled.

She also had a noticeable lisp.

That caused her words to come out jumbled.

She spoke way too softly and too fast.

No wonder I could not understand her!

When I repeated what I thought she said,

Set let loose with a bout of laughter

She said each ear needed a hearing aid.

She’s WRONG, for my hearing is just fine!

I know exactly why she’s saying this.

All she wants is the money that is mine!
