Where Hope Meets Fear

In the Christmas carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” we sing the verse, “the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.”

Hope meets fear.

This is an encounter that did not just take place in Bethlehem long ago.

Each Christmas we welcome Christ anew into our hearts and homes.

Jesus comes to us this year with the hope of salvation. Jesus seeks to meet us in all our fears and uncertainties.

Our world longs for the coming of Christ.

Let us pray in these days of Christmas that we might be saved from the sin and sadness that cast their shadow over us.

Just as on that holy night in Bethlehem, when the Divine Light shone bright upon the dark streets of that little town, so too we believe that Christ will bring light into the darkness of our world, our communities, our homes and our hearts.

May the Light of Christ shine bright within and around us this Christmas.

– Robert G. Casey, Most Reverend Archbishop of Cincinnati
