All eligible individuals are being asked to immediately donate blood or platelets. A higher volume of usage and lower number of donors has resulted in a critical need for blood donations according to Hoxworth spokesperson Jackie Marschall.

“Increased usage in our area hospitals and low donor turnout over the last few weeks has officially put us in critical need of donors of all types,” said Marschall. “Hoxworth has officially reached critical levels that can only be replenished by volunteer blood donors. We are calling on the community to help us bolster the blood supply.”

Individuals who donate blood or platelets at a Hoxworth Neighborhood Donor Center today through May 27 will receive a cooler/tote bag as a thank you gift. Additionally, individuals who donate platelets now through May 30 will be entered into a drawing for a chance to throw the first pitch at the June 7 Cincinnati Reds game.

This has been an exceptionally difficult year maintaining blood supply according to Jose Cancelas, MD, PhD, Director/CEO of Hoxworth Blood Center.

“National blood shortages this year have been the worst in decades, and Hoxworth is not immune to the struggle of maintaining a stable inventory of blood products,” said Cancelas. “There is no artificial substitute for blood, nor is there a way to manufacture blood in a lab. Every transfusion has to come from a volunteer donor, which is why we’re calling on the Tri-State community to come to our aid at this time.”

Hoxworth officials note that donors will be needed to maintain a stable blood supply for local patients throughout the summer.

  • Appointments are highly encouraged at this time.
  • Donors are NOT REQUIRED to wear masks.
