FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2022-003 DAILY FEATURE:
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (January 6, 2022) – In Issue 2022-003 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we celebrate Jamaican style.
YA MON
It’s a party in Jamaica today – the annual Maroon Festival, which celebrates the 1739 treaty signed between the leader of the Maroons and the British Empire.
Street fairs, music and dancing take center stage accompanied by traditional gumbeh drumming and spicy pork dishes.
Accompong Town, up in the mountains, is the center of the festivities. It is home to the descendants of Africans taken from Ghana and brought to Jamaica to work on the plantations. A ceremonial parade goes to the Kindah Tree, the spot where the Maroons sat and planned their strategy against the British.
To experience Afro-Caribbean culture at its finest, a trip to the Maroon Festival is a must.
Tallis never visited Jamaica, but he created a map of it in 1850.
