FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2023-129 DAILY FEATURE:

LOVELAND, OH (July 13, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps from Steve Kovacs, we wonder: have you seen the sign?

HOLLYWOOD

Hollywoodland Sign on Mount Lee was completed 100 years ago today, in 1923, as a temporary advertisement for a new nearby housing development.

Well, it being southern California, the sign took on its own life.

“Land” was removed, and the rest is history… well until 1978 when a sturdier steel structure was erected, spelling out Hollywood.

To keep up with the illusion, Hollywood is a small section of Los Angeles.  But, it houses Grauman’s Chinese Theater – branded TCL for legal reasons – with the many hand and foot prints of famous actors in front of it, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Kodak (now Dolby) Theater, and the list goes on.

The movie and TV studios are scattered mostly south and west of Hollywood (well, largely except of NBC which is northeast).  Most offer tours.  We saw nearly all – the best in our view is Paramount.

This promotional map by a local bank of Hollywood is from 1930.
