FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2026-137

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (August 19, 2026) – In Fun with Maps today we visit a little history of our neighbors north of the border.

Upper Canada

The Canada Company was incorporated by British Royal Charter 200 years ago, on August 19, 1826.

The Company’s primary mission was to aid colonization of Upper Canada, which is today’s southern portion of Ontario.

The aid included cheap fares on good ships, low-cost land sales and funding working infrastructure – roads, mills, schoolhouses, churches and the like.

Subsequently, the area was quickly populated by largely British immigrants, displacing the native Mississauga people.   The Mississauga, however, got an important suburb west of Toronto named after them, which is home to the Toronto International Airport.

As a piece of trivia, the southernmost point in today’s Canada is in Ontario – former Upper Canada…
