FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2024-128

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (July 11, 2024) – In this edition of Fun with Maps we learn the tumultuous history of politics in days of yore.

Bruce Power

So you think politics is rough and tumble now?  Go back to the days of Robert the Bruce in Scotland and see what you think.

He was born 750 years ago today and he was King of Scots from 1306 to 1329.

Previous to being King he was excommunicated by the Pope for his alleged involvement in the murder of John Comyn, a contender to lead the Scots.  He later received absolution by the Bishop of Glasgow.

Robert lost to the English in a battle in 1306 and after hiding for a year, his forces did defeat the English.  The only thing to deal with were his fellow Scots, beyond Comyn, who he eliminated by destroying their castles and devastating their lands in order to take power.

A politician and a nice guy all around.
