Ode to Joy

Ludwig van Beethoven had his debut as a pianist in 1795 on this day in Vienna.

He is one of the most influential musicians and composers of all time. Did you know about his handicap?  He became increasingly deaf during his last 15-20 years of life. That did not deter him from composing many pieces of music.  That included the now anthem of the European Union, Ode to Joy, which is the final movement of his Symphony No. 9, composed while he was fully deaf at age 54.

Here is Tanner’s map of Austria-Hungary from 1836.  Beethoven died 9 years prior to the issuance of this map
