GAINING INDEPENDENCE

Cyprus gained independence from Britain 60 years ago today.

This eastern Mediterranean island nation is rich in history, with the first human activity dating back to ca. 12,000 years.  The nation today is divided, with internal border, between the Greek and Turkish sides.

Today’s feature map is from Abraham Ortelius. He was a Brabantian (Dutch heritage) cartographer and geographer.  He is the creator of the first modern atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.  He is believed to be the first person to imagine that the continents were joined together before drifting apart over time.

Here is a map of the Cyprus Island from 1573 by Abraham Ortelius.
