FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2021-66 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (April 7, 2021) – In Issue 2021-66 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we welcome Mississippi (easy to spell) to the Union.

Great River

The Mississippi Territory was established in 1798 on this day largely from lands ceded by Georgia and South Carolina.  It became the 20th state 19 years later.

The state obtained its name from the Mississippi River, which is its western border for the most part.

The name Mississippi is from the Ojibwe term for Great River, misiziibi.

Here is Tanner’s folding pocket map of Mississippi from 1836.  Pocket maps were quite popular in the 1800’s given their portability.
