LOVELAND, OH (July 23, 2024) – In this edition of Fun with Maps we celebrate 120 years of the Ice Cream Cone!
THE SCOOP AT THE ST. LOUIS WORLD’S FAIR
According to many accounts, July 23rd would be the 120th anniversary of the ice cream cone.
While there are several variations of the frosty treat’s true invention, there is no doubt that the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis is where the popular introduction of the edible “cornucopia” was launched.
The cone consisted of a rolled waffle, the cone shape perfect for holding a few scoops of ice cream. But there are seven men claiming the cone-ice cream marriage to be their idea.
Other foods are associated with the fair, properly named the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition, but like the ice cream cone, were unlikely to actually have been invented there. But they certainly gained in popularity. Classic American standards introduced widely to the American public include the hamburger, the hot dog, peanut butter, cotton candy, the club sandwich, and iced tea.
So, raise a cone to St. Louis, its World’s Fair, and the Missouri state dessert!
The Fair was held at what was then called Forest Park, which is left center of the map shown by Poates, dating to 1895.
