FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2023-178 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (November 2, 2023) – Today’s edition of Fun with Maps offers us a little history on this day honoring the souls of the departed.

Dead but not forgotten

Today is All Souls’ Day.  This is a day of prayer for the faithful departed.

It is closely linked in Mexico to the Day of the Dead, celebrated typically on November 1 and 2.

The roots of the Day of the Dead are murky, but many believe, without much proof, that it dates to the Aztecs.

Traditionally, altars are created for the Day of the Dead and food and drinks are provided for both the living and dead.

And of course, there are the celebrations and parties.  There are significant local variations on the specific nature of the celebrations, but colorful costumes and skull shaped masks tend to be part of most celebrations and processions.   The day is celebrated in parts of the US as well.

Colton created this colorful map of Mexico in 1854.
