FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2024-180

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (September 24, 2024) – In this edition of Fun with Maps we look at a tower of rock monument.

ALIENS

The first National Monument was dedicated by Theodore Roosevelt on September 24, 1906 – Devils Tower in northeast Wyoming.

The natives called this magmatic rock formation Bear’s Lodge.  Due to a mistranslation from Cheyenne to English, an expedition took back the name Devils Tower and the name stuck.

It has become increasingly popular with rock climbers, and it offers spectacular views from its relatively flat top.

Devils Tower was a featured part of Steven Spielberg’s 1977 science fiction movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind – UFOs and aliens.

Watson’s map of Wyoming is presented here from 1887.
