Encouraged by CHCA Art Teacher Tim Hilderbrand to enter the contest, Rosenfeldt placed first in the Literary Stories category with her story, “To Make Music”.
“A love story told in a series of summertime vignettes. The author’s gorgeous restraint echoes the characters’ inability to fully comprehend what they are to each other and heightened my connection to their relationship.” – One of the contest judges
Teacher Tim Hilderbrand explained how he chose to encourage Rosenfeldt to compete in the writing competition.
“If an opportunity for a student to compete in a Fine Arts competition comes across my desk, I’m compelled to pass that chance to a student who I know not only has a good chance at winning, but will also take advantage of the opportunity,” Hilderbrand said. “Abby is a go-getter and I knew she would be excited about the prospect.”
Rosenfeldt’s recent writings have also been recognized by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, where she received two Silver Keys and four Honorable Mentions. Rosenfeldt expressed her gratititude toward her teachers when asked about receiving the award.
“I’m thankful to all of my English teachers over the years, including Ms. Barron and Mrs. Pritchard,” said Rosenfeldt. “I’m also especially grateful to my former Literature Teacher, Mrs. Ehlen, who mentored me in creative writing and took me to my first ever writing competition in 8th grade. I hope she would be proud to see how far I’ve come.”
CHCA Upper School English Department Chair Michelle Barron had Abby Rosenfeldt as a student in her class and recognized her talent early.
“I’ve been privileged to teach Abby twice,” said Barron. “As a freshman, she exhibited writing talent, passion for the art, and dedication to improving her craft. Consequently, her writing became more impressive each year. I’m so glad that her talent and dedication were acknowledged with this award. It is richly deserved.”
