FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2023-81 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (April 28, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps from Steve Kovacs, we celebrate a century of Wembley.

The World’s Football

The original Wembley Stadium in London opened 100 years ago today.  It was called then the British Empire Exhibition Stadium.

It held many iconic events from the English Football Cup Association finals to many European Football finals to concerts and so on, until it was demolished in 2003.

Like the phoenix, it rose again as a new stadium in 2007.  It held similar events as before and added football matches of the 2012 London Olympics.

The most remarkable feature of the new 90,000 spectator stadium is that it has more toilets at 2618 than any other venue in the world.  Lots of beer sales…

This spectacular pictorial map of London by MacDonald Gill is from 1924, the dawn of resurgence of pictorial maps.
