By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (October 6, 2023) – Today’s edition of Fun with Maps takes us out of the silent films and into the world of sound in the movies.

Talkies

The first motion picture with a soundtrack was released on this day in 1927 – The Jazz Singer, released by Warner Brothers.

It is hard to believe but true that movies 100 years ago had no sound.  Pianists typically accompanied the movie.

The golden age of US cinema spanned from 1910 to 1969.  Columbia, MGM, Warner, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Disney, and some others participated.

They created iconic films – Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Sleeping Beauty, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, etc.

Los Angeles, a relatively new city.  Here is a street map of L.A. from 1923.
