FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2021-90 DAILY FEATURE:
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (May 11, 2021) – In Issue 2021-90 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we celebrate a long history of changes.
Old and New
It is somewhat ironic and at the same time fitting that Israel’s largest city of ca. 500,000 people celebrates today the 100th anniversary of it becoming a municipality, having been founded a few years prior. This city is the economic and technological center of the country.
The city is Tel Aviv.
This ancient land has been contested for many years and changed hands among rulers and countries repeatedly. To name a few, aside from the Israeli tribes: Persian Empire, Roman Empire, Arab rulers, Mamluk Sultanate, Ottoman Empire and finally the British Empire from 1920 to 1948 when Israel won its independence. Long term peace continues to remain uncertain in the region.
Here is a historical map of the region by the German cartographer Seutter from 1753 showing the lands occupied by the twelve tribes of Israel. The Exodus is depicted in the lower right inset.
