By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (September 19, 2023) – Avast ye, today’s edition of Fun with Maps celebrates the greatest parody ever to take hold…as an official holiday.

PIRATE

Today is TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY.  Since 1995.

Piracy, or theft at the high seas, is not new.  The earliest pirates recorded were in the 14th century BC in the Aegean Sea by Greece.

The romantic period of pirates dates from 1650 to about 1720 in the Caribbean where the French, British, Spanish and Dutch had considerable investment and trade.  Aside from private enterprises, state sponsored piracy was not uncommon in the Caribbean.

Blackbeard, born as Edward Teach in England, was probably the most notorious pirate in the Caribbean.

In this century, the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea is most vulnerable to piracy, mostly by Somalis.

Ottens’ classic and colorful map of the Caribbean from 1730 is presented here.
