FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2022-011 DAILY FEATURE:

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (January 18, 2022) – In Issue 2022-011 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we celebrate the founding of the largest city in Peru.

CITY OF THE KINGS

Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizzaro founded the city of Lima, Peru on this date in 1535.  Pizzaro led the Spanish conquest of Peru and the end of Inca rule there.

Because of a famous oracle in the area, the natives called the location “limaq”, which meant “speaker” in the local language.  The Spanish called it the City of Kings (Ciudad de los Reyes), and some antique maps will show both names for the city.

Modern Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru.  It is also a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lima is a melting pot of European, Andean, African, and Asian cultures.  It has been called the Gastronomical Capital of the Americas because of the fusion of so many traditions.

The colonial architecture, beautiful beaches, and world-class cuisine make Lima a top destination for tourists.

Colton created this map of Peru and Bolivia in 1855 for inclusion into his General Atlas.
