FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2024-129

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (July 12, 2024) – In this edition of Fun with Maps we celebrate the Rolling Stones performing in concert.

GATHERING NO MOSS

The Rolling Stones gave their first public performance on July 12, 1962 at London’s Marquee Jazz Club.

The Rollin’ Stones, as they were billed at the time, consisted of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Dick Taylor, Ian Stewart, and Mick Avory.  Mick’s first thoughts to the press about the proposed gig – “I hope they don’t think we’re a Rock ‘n’ Roll outfit”.  Jagger considered himself an R&B vocalist.

Now into their 7th decade of performing, the group started out as a cover band.  Jones emerged as the early leader of the band, with Jagger and Richards the primary songwriting force.

Since their formation, The Rolling Stones have released 31 studio albums, 13 live albums and 28 compilation albums.  They rank as the 4th best-selling group in history, with sales of over 250 million albums.
