FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2023-90 DAILY FEATURE:
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (May 11, 2023) – In today’s edition of Fun with Maps from Steve Kovacs, we celebrate the anniversary of the State of Minnesota joining the union.
MANY LAKES
The land of the 10,000 lakes is the claim but it has about 14,000 lakes formed as the last ice of the ice shelf receded to the north. Its name is from the Dakota language.
The biggest port is Duluth, known for shipping iron ore. This is historically the most important city in the state as the iron mined nearby fueled the US’s industrial revolution.
Minneapolis is the largest city, formally the grain capital of the Midwest. St. Paul is right next door where the politicians hang out.
Minnesota joined the union in 1858 on this day.
This Mitchell map of Minnesota from 18 years later still shows sparse county development up north.
