FUN WITH MAPS ISSUE 2024-212

By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)

LOVELAND, OH (November 20, 2024) – In this edition of Fun with Maps we honor a revolution south of the border.

Mexican Revolution

Today is Mexican Revolution Day – Army General Diaz, who ruled for 35 years, was eventually overthrown by populist Madero as President after the 1910 elections.

Mexico has a rich history, dating back about 10 thousand years.  The Aztecs and the Mayans left behind monuments and other artifacts.

Corn, tomato and beans were farmed, creating a food surplus.  Oh yeah, the human sacrifices helped to mitigate demand.

Then came the Catholic Spanish, who ruthlessly threw everything into chaos.

Cary’s map of Mexico from 1819 shows a lot of territory up north now belonging to the US.
