Utah
Utah became the 45th state to join the Union 125 years ago today.
The name “Utah” means “people of mountains” based on the language of the Pueblo Indians.
The early settlers included Brigham Young and his Mormon pioneers who came to Utah in the mid-1840s.
In the 19th century there was a lot of change in the West, including Utah. Borders came and went. Many counties tended to be rather large, given the sparse population among the settlers.
Note the large counties and the southern tip of today’s Nevada, including what became Las Vegas, still being part of the Arizona Territory in this snapshot of the West from 1864 by Johnson.
