FUN WITH MAPS – ISSUE 2021-242 DAILY FEATURE:
By Steve Kovacs (Introduction by Chuck Gibson)
LOVELAND, OH (December 22, 2021) – In Issue 2021-242 of Steve Kovacs Fun with Maps, we learn the first gorilla bred in captivity.
MILLIE AND MAC’S BABY GIRL
On December 22, 1956, the first gorilla born in captivity was born at the Columbus, Ohio zoo.
Colo was the daughter of Millie Christina and Baron Macombo, a pair of lowland gorillas caught in, what was then French Cameroon, and brought to the zoo in 1951.
Colo and her mate, Bongo, had 3 babies and were grandparents to 16. Now reaching the great-grand stage and even great-great grand stage, Colo’s lineage still continues at the Columbus Zoo.
Before she died in 2017, Colo became the world’s oldest gorilla, living to a ripe old age of 61.
Johnson’s map of Ohio is presented here, issued in 1864.
